Our transitional year program is designed for residents in need of fulfilling a preliminary or base year before entering a categorical residency program, or for residents wishing to clarify long-term educational goals. The level of patient care responsibility of the transitional year resident is equal to R-1s in our other programs (general surgery, pediatrics, internal medicine, and family medicine). In addition, residents attend a variety of conferences including check-in rounds, morning reports, daily noon conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences and weekly grand rounds. The Transitional Year Residency at Iowa Methodist Medical Center accepts applications solely through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) from September through December. Interviewing is completed, by invitation, from November through January. In addition to the main application and the Dean's Letter, the program requires three letters of reference, USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 results, and your medical school transcripts. All qualified medical students are encouraged to apply to our program.
